BOB DYLAN The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan with Four Deleted Tracks Mono LP (Columbia 1986, 1963)

This is the record that the Goldmine Album Guide lists at the top of its "100 Most Valuable U. S. Albums" chart. After "Freewheelin' " was recorded in 1963, there were four tracks that did not make the final release -- "Talkin' John Birch Society Blues," "Let Me Die in My Footsteps," "Rocks and Gravel," and "Gamblin' Willies Dead Man's Hand." The reasons for this depend on whom you ask; some say CBS pressured Dylan to remove "Talkin' John Birch" because they feared some would find it offensive, others say Dylan simply chose to reshuffle the the track list for artistic reasons (a number of tracks recorded with a full backing band had already been scrapped to maintain Dylan's presence as an acoustic folk performer). Either way, the first version of the album was ready to be shipped when it was pulled and restamped; somehow a number of those original discs were relabeled and released into circulation, and have become much sought-after collectors' items. In the mid-1990s a couple of mono copies sold for $10,000 to $12,000, and the only two stereo copies of this version to be discovered are valued at $35,000 to $40,000.

TONY SHERIDAN AND THE BEAT BROTHERS 45 RPM Record (Decca 31382, 1962)

A: My Bonnie
B: The Saints

One of the rarest of Beatles U.S. records.

Both Tony Sheridan and The Beatleswere British acts imported to play long hours for the raucous crowds at the Kaiserkeller and The Star-Club in Hamburg's seedy late-night district. The Beatles at that time included StuSutcliffe on bass and Pete Best on drums. German bandleader Bert Kaempert saw Sheridan as a rising star and arranged a recording contract with the Beatles as his backup band. The nine songs thathave surfaced from those sessions feature Sheridan singing lead on seven, Lennon on "Ain't She Sweet", and one instrumental, "Cry fora Shadow". The biggest hit from the session was "My Bonnie", which peaked at #5 in the UK, credited to Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers.

In 1962 the Beatles were already becoming stars in the UK, but this US release proved the US wasn't quite ready for the Beatlemania that would follow two years later. The record went nowhere commercially; in fact, promo copies actually outnumber the commercial copies because all but a few of the latter were just trashed! Now it's a highly sought-after rarity!

The best estimate is that only 20-25 copies exist. Of the two label styles that exist for this record, this version having the bolder print and the selection number '31382' in the color bar area of the label is the scarcest.
