Sculptured by the distinguished American medalist Gilroy Roberts, it portrays all seven of the Nobel Laureates who brought such honor to their nation. The 1974 Calendar / Art Medal is a handsome blending of the mystical signs of the Zodiac with the calendar for the new year.
"I was really pleased with the challenge of sculpturing this medal." explains sculptor Ernest Lauser. "Since the calendar for this medal was to be placed with six months to a side, the design called for an approach different from past years when all twelve months were on one side. The fluid action of the twelve signs of the Zodiac seemed most appropriate for the design. Particularly when one thinks of the close association of the Zodiac and the calendar months. Early man relied on nature --- the sun, moon and stars --- to record and measure the passage of time, just as we use the calendar."
Lauser is a Sagittarian, and his design shows the careful planning and imagination attributed to those born under this Zodiac sign. His delightful renderings of the age-old Zodiac symbols give a sense of animation to the Calendar / Art Medal --- a feeling that the monthly calendars and the signs are in orbit around the design's central figures.
The 1974 Calendar/Art Medal was minted in both sterling silver and bronze. Each medal is 76mm in diameter and is individually oxidized (antiqued), giving it a special finish which allows handling without damage to the surface.

"I was always amazed by Da Vinci's overwhelming achievement in creating "The Last Supper," Fritz Weiland says, "and I knew the painting was gradually disappearing from the wall. I decided it would be a good thing to create "The Last Supper" in metal, to make it permanent so it would never be lost to us. This interpretation of "The Last Supper" was first conceived 50 years ago by the brilliant artists and engraver Fritz Weiland, and protected and preserved throughout a career of achievement. He retired in 1975, at the age of 75, as master engraver of The Franklin Mint. This is the first issue of this work of art.
Weiland worked from a reproduction of "The Last Supper" that was unclear because of the original work done by Leonardo in the 15th century was faded. So he engraved what he thought Leonardo would have wanted. Weiland engraved the work directly into steel, in reverse, creating in one hand-operation the dies from which the finished ingot was struck. It was struck in relieve, then antiqued to bring out the beauty of the work. Each ingot is issued custom mounted in a hardwood frame.
The surface area of the ingot is more than 7.5 square inches. The reverse of the ingot bears Fritz Weiland's signature, etched into the ingot, to certify the authenticity of the work.

The National Historical Society, headquartered in Gettysburg, PA., was dedicated to bringing the significance of American history to all the people in the U.S. and to enrich their enjoyment and understanding of the events contributing to American freedom.
In keeping with this mission, the Society issued a medallic history of America. This history was recorded as a set of 100 medallic cachets, each recapturing one of the greatest events in America's past. Each cachet (envelope) carries a medal portraying the event it honors in authentic and historically accurate detail. Each stamped cachet is officially postmarked at the closest available post office to the site identified with the event on its exact anniversary date. To add to its historical value, each cachet bears a first-person account of the event commemorated, as reported by an actual eyewitness of the time. The eyewitnesses to these great events include some of America's most outstanding patriots.
The 100 events selected by the Society encompassed the entire history of America. To give the collection a feeling of immediacy, each of these events was depicted as it was actually seen and reported to an eyewitness to that event.
A special Certificate of Authenticity, bearing the signature of the Society's president, also accompanies the collection. To house and display the collection, a matched set of two custom-designed hardbound library albums was provided to each subscriber.

The Resurrection is an original work which Frudakis created expressly for the first Annual Franklin Mint Easter Plate. The celebrated sculptor's first collector's plate is a superb illustration of the artist's classical technique which adapts itself magnificently to the reverent interpretation of religious subjects. Here Frudakis has pictured the central fact of the Easter celebration---Jesus Christ's emergence from the tomb after his Crucifixion, arising from death to life---conveying the universal promise of redemption and resurrection.
