Is it true the Jefferson nickel was designed in open competition outside the Mint?

November 07, 2025 - The design for the Jefferson nickel originated from a completely open competition for a $1000 prize. The winning design was submitted by Felix Schlag, a rather obscure sculptor at the time. His initials "FS" were added below the bust beginning in 1966.
