REVENGE OF THE JEDI Original American Dated Advance One Sheet (20th Century Fox, 1983)

Original American One Sheet from the 1983 film starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher. Distributed by 20th Century Fox. Authentic originals measure 27 1/8" wide by 41" high. Versions that measure 40" high are not originals.

George Lucas originally intended to title his third Star Wars movie “Return of the Jedi.”  Another producer told him that that title was “too weak” so he changed it to “Revenge of the Jedi.”   Drew Struzan designed the “Revenge” poster.  In December 1982 Lucas decided that “Revenge” was not appropriate and returned to his original title.  However, by that time thousands of Revenge posters had been printed and hundreds had been distributed to theaters. Lucasfilm stopped the shipping of the posters and destroyed all but 6,800 posters, which were sold in three days to Star Wars fan club members for $9.50. (Source: The Star Wars Poster Book)

Authentic originals of the dated version measure EXACTLY 27 1/8 inches wide by 41 inches high. One version of known counterfeit measures 27 1/2 inches wide by 41 1/2 inches high. Authentic originals have the word STAR WARS in YELLOW not orange. Authentic originals have the words PRINTED IN U.S.A. in the bottom left hand white border and the words THE REVENGE OF THE JEDI TEASER ONE SHEET in the bottom right hand white border area.

This dated version has date text as follows: "Coming May 25th, 1983 to your galaxy"

Beware of rolled reprints, fakes and counterfeits. Fakes are known to exist and difficult to detect. Buy only from a reputable dealer who offers a guarantee of authenticity.

There have been three known fakes of the Revenge poster (not counting the 27x40 obvious reprints). The first fake was copied from a folded poster so there are fold lines in the printing. To cover this, the posters are folded so you have to look carefully at the fold lines. The second was copied from a rolled poster and was a good counterfeit except the 20th Century Fox logo is fuzzy. The third counterfeit is outstanding. It looks perfect except for one minor flaw. On the original poster, the bottom right corner is solid black. The fake has a couple of little clouds in the lower right hand black area. The clouds appear as if they belong there because just above the solid black area is clouds.

The vast majority of posters that escaped destruction have the tagline “Coming May 25, 1983 to your galaxy” at the bottom.  Some posters were printed without the tagline.  (According to reports, these may be “international” posters sent to other countries. This makes sense because the movie started playing after May 25 in countries other than the US.) The posters without the release date command somewhat higher prices than the “Coming May 25” posters.
