Aluminum is bought and sold by the pound. There are 454 grams in a standard pound. Aluminum buyers pay around 50 cents per pound as of this writing. These are your key starting point facts.

Aluminum cans are VERY lightweight. But, not all aluminum cans weigh the same. A tall 23.5 ounce can weighs more than a small 12 ounce can (obviously). So, you can't just say there are X cans to a pound. A tall 23.5 ounce Monster or Budweiser can will probably weigh around 25 grams, while a small 12 ounce Coke or Budweiser can will weigh somewhere around 15 grams.

Aluminum is a commodity sold on the open market. So the price for the metal fluctuates every day, and your local recyclers may offer slightly different rates as well. It takes about 34 cans to make up one pound of aluminum. The price per pound will range based on the price of aluminum in the world market. You can call your local scrap metal recycling plant to get a current price, but they often have minimums and certain delivery requirements (such as cans must be crushed, etc).

According to the Aluminum Association, Americans earn nearly $1 billion a year from recycling aluminum cans. But because our recycling rate is just over 50%, that means there is $1 billion of aluminum cans tossed into landfills. So there is money to be made!
