The National Historical Society Civil War Chess Set (Franklin Mint, 1983)

Richly detailed portrait sculptures of great American heroes, in solid pewter, solid brass and fine enamels. An heirloom chess set to be enjoyed for generations. Created by the world famous craftsmen of the Franklin Mint. The national Historical Society Civil War Chess Set is a dramatic and fascinating tribute to the heroes of both North and South. The playing pieces are richly-detailed three-dimensional portrait sculptures of the great Generals on both sides, as well as enlisted men.

Every figure is a new and original work, created expressly for this unique chess set. Some are shown standing, some seated, some kneeling, some mounted on horseback. Each piece is captured for the ages in solid pewter, then set atop a solid brass pedestal base embellished with a circular band of colored enamel---blue for the soldiers of the Union, gray for those of the Confederacy.

Crafted for the Society by The Franklin Mint, each figure is scaled to suit the role assigned to it in the game of chess. The set includes a handsome pewter-finished playing board, the fitted protective case, a Certificate of Authenticity and specially written reference materials.

The Royal Geographical Society Silver Map of the World (Franklin Mint, 1976)

An alleged "silver" map of the world, engraved in a 18th century manner. The map is contained within a gilt metal strapwork border, hallmarked, 19 1/2 inches by 27 1/2 inches (37cm x 56cm), in a ornate, heavy custom wood frame. Released in 1976. There is less than 4 ounces of silver in this map, contrary to other reports elsewhere on the Internet. We owned a damaged example at one time, and took it apart. The silver is glued to a heavy Masonite board, which makes it appear that the silver is very heavy, but once the thin foil of silver is removed from the heavy Masonite board, less than 4 ounces of sterling silver is left.

Bicentennial Baccarat Crystal & Sterling Silver Powderhorn (Franklin Mint, 1976)

1976 Franklin Mint Bicentenial Powderhorn made of the finest Baccarat Crystal, inlaid with solid sterling silver.
It comes in a green display box lined w/ green velour and a wooden mounting cradle. The horn is 11" long and 6" tall when mounted in the cradle. The display box measures 13" across x 9" deep x 3 1/2" tall.

During Revolutionary time carved powderhorns were a highly regarded form of art. To help pass the time in the lull between battles and during the long winter encampments, soldiers inscribed their powderhorns with intricate designs. With a sharp knife, artistic skill and a creative imagination, a soldier could transpose a utilitarian object into a thing of beauty.

This commemorative features an original design created by the distinguished artist Isa Barnett, who has captured the heroic spirit of the patriots perservering during the bitter winter encampments to serve the cause of freedom.

This Franklin Mint Bicentennial Powderhorn is a reminder of the suffering endured by our forefathers in their struggles to achieve independence.

The design on the horn was created by the artist Isa Barnett. It is hand blown of Baccarat crystal and it is capped and banded in solid sterling silver with a sterling silver chain.

The beautiful horn is sparkling "Baccarat" crystal, and has a sterling silver lid on one end and a collar and chain on the other.

The Royal Shakespeare Theater Presents The Great Plays of Shakespeare Medals Collection (Franklin Mint, 1972)

Complete set of 38 medals. 45mm. Issued in both sterling silver and gold-plated sterling, each of equal value. The plays of Shakespeare represent an achievement without parallel in the entire history of civilization. In our time, they are more widely read and more frequently performed throughout the world, than they ever have been in the past. The reason for this is that through the prism of Shakespeare's genius, the entire pageant of human experience is seen clear and whole. He alone totally succeeded in holding a true "mirror up to human nature."

Two editions of 38 Shakespeare medals were issued by the Royal Shakespeare Theater of Stratford-Upon-Avon, England. The 45 millimeter proof series was issued to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the first printed folio of Shakespeare's plays, in 1623. The 32 millimeter medals commemorate the centenary of the founding in 1869 of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at its present location.

Each medal is sculptured in bas-relief, and captures the essence of one of Shakespeare's 38 plays. Each work of medallic art is the creation of the distinguished English sculptor Philip Nathan. He spent three years in Shakespeare's birthplace, and received advice from the staff of the Theatre, who helped him decide on the characters to portray, and the dramatic impact of each scene. Each medal interprets the essence of a different play, in a finely detailed sculpture. A custom-designed hardbound album was provided free of charge to each subscriber.

The 45 millimeter set was issued from 1971-1974. 2173 sets of the gold electroplate on sterling silver were minted. 3287 sets in sterling silver were also produced.

The 32 millimeter set was issued from 1979-1982.

Franklin Mint Love Tokens (Sterling)

39mm. Price is per medal.
In 1976 and again in 1977, the mint issued a love token. The Lover's Knot token issued in 1976, features the endless lover's knot, an ancient symbol of love and fidelity. It is a symbol that has been exchanged between lovers for centuries to express the intertwining of their lives and the unending nature of their love.

The flower of Love (Fleur d'Amour) token issued in 1977, bears a sculptured flower design, with individual hearts forming the petals of the flower. It expresses both tenderness and passion, since flowers and hearts are among the most ancient symbols of love. The design is especially evocative of the larkspur, in the language of lovers, symbolizes 'An open heart and an ardent attachment.'

Pendants, with the same obverse and reverse designs, were also issued.

45mm diameter medals. Complete set of 100. This set was released in both a gold-plated sterling and a sterling edition, both of which have the same value today. The set was issued from 1977-1984.

For centuries, Peter Paul Rubens has been universally acknowledged as one of the greatest artists who ever lived, a towering genius whose work stands beside that of Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Rembrandt and Raphael. For Rubens was an artist of power and vision, who could make even the most traditional subjects come alive with remarkable freshness and vitality. A brilliant artist who could capture the graceful beauty of the human form with a skill unsurpassed in the history of art. A master whose bold yet beautiful style ushered in the Baroque error of art, and whose work still stands as the ultimate achievement of that creative period.

At the 400th anniversary of his birth in 1577, the genius of Rubens was captured in this collection of 100 fine art sculptured medals, that portrays 100 of his greatest works. A hard-crafted, hardwood colelctor's chest, custom-designed in the rich Baroque style of Ruben's own time, was furnished to each subscriber.

39mm. Issued in a 24KT gold clad version and a sterling silver only version. A collection of 100 medals commemorating the 100 most significant events in the history of the Presidency of the United States as selected by our 38th President, Gerald R. Ford.

For the first time in history, a former President of the U. S. is involved in the creation of a definitive and very different study of the American Presidency. A history of America's highest office that focuses not only on the men who have held it, but also on the events that have shaped that great office. This history is being recorded in a series of 100 commemorative medals. Gerald R. Ford, the 38th President of the U. S., re-examined the history of the Presidency and chose the 100 events in the history of the U. s. that were most influential in shaping the nature of that office. Important, exciting and controversial events that have  defined and dramatized the extent of our President's powers.

President Ford wrote a special preface for the collection and is personally editing the written commentaries that accompany each medal . Each subscriber also received a matched set of two custom-designed hardbound albums. A Certificate of Authenticity bearing President Ford's signature was also included. The proof edition was the only serially numbered edition.
