Vintage DOUGLAS SBD DAUNTLESS DIVE BOMBER 1/48 Plastic Model Kit (Monogram PA54-150, 1967)72-247)

1/48 scale U.S. NAVY DOUGLAS SBD DAUNTLESS DIVE BOMBER plastic model kit with operating dive brakes, landing gear. Center bomb drops and machine gun swivels.

The Douglas Aircraft Corp. SBD Dauntless dive bomber became a mainstay of the U.S. Navy’s World War II air fleet in the Pacific, with the lowest loss ratio of any U.S. carrier-based aircraft. Douglas delivered a total of 5,936 SBDs between 1940 and the end of production in July 1944.

The Dauntless was developed at the Douglas Northrop facility at El Segundo, Calif., and was based on the Northrop Model 8 attack bomber developed for both the Army and the export market. The SBD Dauntless featured “Swiss cheese” flaps — dive brakes punched with 3-inch holes — so that it could achieve pinpoint accuracy by diving to the target, dropping the bomb and then pulling out of the near-vertical dive.

In addition to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Army Air Forces, the Dauntless served air forces in New Zealand and Mexico.

The first enemy ship sunk by the U.S. Navy in World II is credited to a Dauntless from the USS Enterprise. The diving Dauntless went on to destroy 18 enemy warships, including a battleship and six carriers.

Scale: 1/48

The Beechcrat Staggerwing was and remain one of the finest civilian aircraft ever built. It was the brainchild of Walter Beech, whose dream was to produce a high performance five place luxury biplane with a top speed of over 200 MPH, landing speed of 60 MPH, sound aerodynamics and ease of control. He succeeded brilliantly. Tests of the first model 17 in 1932 yielded performance figures superior to many fighter planes of the day!

WWI French BREGUET 14 1:4 Plastic Model Kit (Aurora Famous Fighters 141-100, 1963)

Scale: 1/4" = 1". Complete with 37 pieces, decal sheet, box and instructions.

The Breguet 14 was a French biplane bomber and reconnaissance aircraft of World War I. It was built in very large numbers and production continued for many years after the end of the war. Apart from its widespread usage, it was noteworthy for becoming the first aircraft in mass production to use large amounts of metal rather than wood in its structure. This allowed the airframe to be lighter than a wooden airframe of the same strength, in turn making the aircraft very fast and agile for its size, able to outrun many of the fighters of the day. Its strong construction was able to sustain much damage, it was easy to handle and had good performance. The Breguet 14 is often considered one of the best aircraft of the war.

The Kingfisher was the U.S. Navy's primary ship-based, scout and observation aircraft during World War II. Revolutionary spot welding techniques gave it a smooth, non-buckling fuselage structure. Deflector plate flaps that hung from the wing's trailing edge and spoiler-augmented ailerons functioned like extra flaps to allow slower landing speeds. Most OS2Us operated in the Pacific, where they rescued many downed airmen, including World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker and the crew of his B-17 Flying Fortress.
