The Everly Brothers' formula for creating Golden Hits sounds deceptively simple at first...simple until somebody else tries it! First of all, each of these hits was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, where the Everlys feel most at home. That's where it all started: the long string of hits that's climaxed by this album. In Nashville, Don and Phil work closely with musicians who have been recording with "The Boys" (as Nashville fondly calls them) since their first session. No arrangements are written for any of the numbers, a fact which has caused some recording personnel visiting from up North to blanch when they first drop by the recording studio.Armed with only melodies and words, the boys work out their arrangements right on the recording studio floor, which accounts for a great deal of the "live-ness" in these Golden Hits. It's almost impossible with less competent singers--and one that gives a large part of that distinctive impact to everything The Everly Brothers sing.
Obviously, it's an impact that the public goes for, and in a BIG way. Their millions of fans )One national Fan Club alone has over 300,000 members) have followed this sound from the Everlys' Nashville days, through their national and world-wide tours, through their many TV and concert appearances, through their recent hitch in The Marines, clear up to the present. It's these fans for whom this album of Golden Hits has been specially prepared. It's a souvenir of their very best. But, unlike a lot of souvenirs, this one won't gather dust. It's just too tempting to play. And play, and play and play.
